England call up Varndell

TOM VARNDELL has been called to replace injured wing Paul Sackey on England's tour of New Zealand

TOM VARNDELL has been called to replace injured wing Paul Sackey on England's tour of New Zealand. Varndell will be joined on the trip by Wasps centre Dominic Waldouck, who has also been promoted from the England Saxons squad after Leicester Tigers' Dan Hipkiss suffered a fractured cheekbone in Saturday's Guinness Premiership final.

Meanwhile, South Africa coach Peter de Villiers is likely to spring a few surprises when the Test series against Wales begins on Saturday in Bloemfontein.

Several weekend newspapers reported de Villiers plans to leave out three World Cup winners - Percy Montgomery, Victor Matfield and Frans Steyn.

Fullback Conrad Jantjes is likely to keep Montgomery out of the side, while uncapped Andries Bekker should start ahead of Matfield. Adrian Jacobs, who last played for the Springboks in 2002, has earned a recall and is set to keep Steyn out.
