Exciting draw hands trophy to England

ITALY and Brazil fought out a thrilling 3-3 draw in Lyon last night in the Tournoi de France which handed England the trophy. England, who play Brazil in Paris tomorrow, have six points from their two games while Brazil have two from two with one to play hosts France and Italy are on Just one point also having played two matches.

Brazil came back from going behind twice to the Italians, Alessandro del Piero netting a brace and Brazilian Aldair heading in an own goal, through Ronaldo. Romario and another own goal by Italian winger Attilio Loinbardo.

The 31-year-old Romario, who had been suffering from a muscle injury, dummied Italian goal-keeper Gianluca Pagliuca, after he had wriggled through challenges from Lombardo and Fabio Cannavarro, and side-footed the ball into an empty net to complete Brazil's comeback. His 20-year-old strike partner Ronaldo, who set up Romario's goal with a superbly weighted pass through two Italian defenders, had started the revival after Del Piero's 62nd minute penalty put Italy 3-1 ahead when he beat Cannavarro and Alessandro Costacurta and slid it past Pagliuca - just beating the goal-keeper's outstretched leg.

The Italians, looking keener for the battle than they had against England last week, opened up a two goal lead in the first half hour as Del Piero, who scored Juventus' only goal in the European Cup final, headed home from club mate Christian Vieri's excellent cross. Further disaster struck the World champions as Demetrio Albertini's free kick was headed into his own net by veteran defender AId air, though the Italian's shot looked to be going well wide.

Roberto Carlos, scorer of the remarkable free kick against France last week, created Brazil's first as he cut in and his pass was deflected into his own net by Lombardo.

Aldair's nightmare continued when in the second-half he fouled Inzaghi, who signed for Juventus from Atalanta last week, and Del Piero succeeded where Roberto Baggio had failed in the 1994 World Cup final, converting the penalty past Taffarel.

The game swung from end to end in the second-half as Roberto Carlos and Filippo Inzaghi, the Italian league's top scorer, hit the post for each side while Mauro Silva was booked for a tackle on Del Piero, which means he misses the game with England.

The Brazilians poured on the pressure with midfielder Denilson, winning his fourth cap, taking the eye with some brilliant runs and shots although his wild effort after running 25 yards and beating the whole Italian defence was a disappointing end.
