Kieren Fallon drew first blood in his battle with Frankie Dettori at the top of the jockeys' table when going one ahead of the Italian at Lingfield yesterday.

The Irishman landed the second division of the Boddingtons Manchester Gold Maiden Stakes on Fa Sadian, beating Dettori on Zydeco by a neck. Fallon, now on 126 winners for the season, led over a furlong out in the centre of the course on Henry Cecil's colt.

However the heat was almost a second slower that the first division won by Mutamam. The colt, regarded as Alec Stewart's best two-year-old, created a favourable impression on his debut, scoring comfortably by a length and a quarter from Dancing Phantom.

Richard Hills sent the Hamdam Al Maktoum-owned juvenile to the front inside the final furlong for a decisive victory.
