The qualifying round for the Father and Son Open Foursomes at Castle GC in Rathfarnham, sponsored by Guardian Life, takes place next Saturday. It is the oldest event of its type in the country and has attracted many big names in its 39-year history.

Several Walker Cup players have participated including Joe Carr, who won the event with son Jody, David Sheahan and Jody Fanagan. Tommy Campbell had a place in the Guinness Book of Records for his long driving feats when he lifted the trophy. Former IRFU president Niall Brophy and Jack Bloom, who gave his name to the Bloom Cup, have also triumphed.

This time the only three-time winners, Paddy and Anthony Power (Stackstown), will be trying to extend their record, while defending champions Mick and Michael Whelan (Edmondstown) will be part of the entry of over 200 pairings. Some vacancies are left on the timesheet - booking at (01) 4904207.
