CHRIS WADDLE'S proposed move to Nottingham Forest was called off yesterday after Bradford threatened to report the Premiership club to the Football Association for an illegal approach.

Forest had hoped to bring in the 36 year old former England winger on a free transfer to help their relegation fight under the impression that he had a clause in his Bradford contract which allowed him to leave if a Premiership club came in for him.

But Bradford, whom Waddle joined this season, disagreed. So Forest, who had intended to sign Waddle until the end of next season, will not have to wait until his Bradford contract runs out if they want to sign him.

The exact obstacle to the move is unclear. Reports varyingly suggest that there was no clause, the agreement was only verbal, the clause only allowed him to leave to become a manager or that Bradford wanted money for the player which Forest were unwilling to pay.

According to Forest's general manager Dave Bassett: "We'd been told that Chris had a clause in his contract that meant he had only to give 24 hours notice of leaving.

"That's not the case, we have now discovered. Bradford have him under contract until the end of the season.
