Four amateur golfers from St Ives Golf Club, near Bingley, West Yorkshire, have driven their club into the record books after they all scored a hole in one during a 14-hole competition at the club last Saturday.

None of them won the competition, but the four could find themselves in the record books.

The only similar reference in the Golfer's Handbook is at Skerries, Co Dublin, during a four-ball event in 1987, when each of the four par-three holes were holed in one.

First, Andrew Morris arrived in the clubhouse celebrating after getting a hole in one on the 188-yard 10th and treated the members to a tot of whisky after buying a couple of bottles of Scotch.

But the drink had barely been finished when retired electricity worker Ron Anderton entered the 19th hole boasting that he had taken just one shot on the 163-yard fourth hole.

As the four-ball competition continued, another two golfers drove their tee-shots into the same par-three fourth hole.

Retired butcher Colin Bastow and former club president John Whalley were amazed to discover they were the third and fourth golfers that day to buy the members a whisky when they finished the competition.

None of them had never scored a hole in one before.

Morris, a member of a GP consortium, said: "Everyone was surprised and pleased for me when I arrived in the clubhouse.

"A hole in one is something you always aim to achieve, but never expect.

"Unfortunately I had to go home before the others finished their rounds, so I didn't know they had done the same thing until days later."

Colin Bastow, who has an eight handicap, said he was also delighted. He said: "I was shocked to get a hole in one myself, but a little astounded to find out others had done it - it's some coincidence."

John Whalley said he could never remember anything like it happening before.

"I've kept the ball I used and have marked it up and it's probably going to end up on a plinth."
