Athletics: Namibian Frankie Fredericks ran a meeting record 20.09 seconds at the Grand Prix I in Nice on Saturday to show he is on course to regain the 200 metres world title he won six years ago.
Fredericks, silver medallist in both sprint events at the last two Olympics, just beat Nigeria's Francis Obikwelu, who clocked 20.15, and American Kevin Little with 20.60.
"I'm very happy with my shape and the time as my last 200 metres was three months ago," Fredericks said afterwards. "It shows I'm healthy and now I need to get into shape for the World Championships."
Kenyan Noah Ngeny just missed out on the 18-year-old 1,000 metres record set by Britain's twice 1,500 metres Olympic winner Sebastian Coe.
He crossed the line in 2:12.66, nearly half a second outside the 2:12.18 time of Coe, set during the summer of 1981 when he held four world records. Ngeny led a Kenyan sweep of the first five places.
Ghanian Leonard Myles-Mills won the 100 metres in a modest time of 10.12 seconds, Kenyan Paul Kosgei took the 3,000 metres steeplechase in eight minutes 9.46 seconds and Britain's Mark Richardson took the 400 metres in 44.98 seconds.
