Cork IT 0-19
NUI Galway 0-10
Last year's beaten Fitzgibbon Cup finalists Cork IT will be part of this year's finals weekend in Limerick IT next week as they overcame NUI Galway yesterday afternoon.
CIT, managed by former Cork captain Pat Mulcahy, were always ahead in the first of this year’s quarter-finals and finished well to ensure victory against a Galway side which couldn’t repeat the heroics of their group stage win over UCC.
Tipperary star John O’Dwyer scored eight points from CIT and excelled in a deep role while Conor Hammersley at midfield and Stephen Murphy in defence were also stand-out players in red and white.
CIT had a great start, opening up a 0-5 to 0-1 lead, before Bobby Duggan and Niall O’Brien scored as part of an NUIG revival which brought them back to within a point, 0-6 to 0-5. Wides cost the visitors though and by half-time, CIT led by 0-10 to 0-16.
The hosts ensured that any efforts by NUIG to eat into that lead in the second half were repelled and a stout defence prevented any goal chances.
While NUIG did get a late penalty, the score was 0-18 to 0-9 by that stage. In any case Duggan’s effort was saved and CIT captain John Cronin rounded off the win with his third point. They face either Mary Immaculate College of Limerick or Dublin IT in the semi-final.
