Glenanne and Trinity land surprise

Hockey : These are end-of-season results

Hockey: These are end-of-season results. Going on form how did Glenanne beat Three Rock Rovers 4-0 and how did Trinity draw 4-4 with Pembroke? People might also ask how Avoca drew with Corinthians 2-2. All in all the Leinster Senior League took a little swerve over the weekend.

Glenanne beating the Leinster Cup finalists 4-0 was the biggest shocker. John Goulding collected two goals in the Tallaght side's spree, which keeps them comfortably at the top of the table and in line to be the top-seeded Leinster team in the All-Ireland play-offs.

The students' 4-4 draw against the Leinster Cup winners, Pembroke, suggests an even more relaxed outing for the second-placed side on the league table. Even though Peter Blakeney hit a late equaliser for Trinity, which for them was an important draw given Avoca's result, it must be one of the biggest score Pembroke have conceded all season.

Indeed, Corinthians had to scramble for their late equaliser at Whitechurch Park, through Dan Williams, to take something from their game against the bottom-placed club Avoca, Johnny Bredin and Stephen Stewart knocking in a goal each for the visitors.

Still, along with Glenanne above Pembroke and Corinthians below them, the top-three places look secure for admission into the All-Ireland league finals and possibly a place in Europe next season. With third-placed Corinthians eight points ahead of their nearest rivals, Rovers, the top of the table is taking a settled look. Corinthians could be caught but the way results are falling it now looks like a remote possibility.
