HOCKEY:ULSTER GOT the better of Leinster in four of the five Irish Senior Cup ties that paired the provinces in Saturday's second round, holders Glenanne and Leinster Division One leaders YMCA the most notable casualties, beaten at home by Annadale and Lisnagarvey respectively.
Having taken just seven points from their six league fixtures so far this season Annadale can’t have travelled to Dublin with soaring confidence, but with the help of an Ian Hamilton hat-trick and Chris Campbell’s golden goal winner they ousted Glenanne, 5-4. Their reward is a quarter-final tie at home to Lisnagarvey.
The Ulster League leaders also edged YMCA by a single goal, Timmy Cockram scoring twice in their 3-2 victory, while Instonians and Banbridge had comfortable wins over UCD (5-1) and Weston (3-0).
Monkstown, then, were the only Leinster side to see off their Ulster opponents, last season’s beaten finalists winning on penalty strokes after a 2-2 draw with Mossley.
Four goals from Adrian Sweeney helped Fingal to a 5-2 defeat of Three Rock Rovers, but John Jermyn outscored him with five in Church of Ireland’s 8-1 first round defeat of Kilkeel.
The match was postponed in November after the sudden death of C of I’s player-coach Andy Chambers prior to the tie.
After Bandon’s 3-1 defeat away to NICS, C of I are the sole remaining Munster representative in the competition. They play Cookstown in the second round, with the winners at home to Fingal in the last eight.
Monkstown were given a home draw against Instonians, while NICS and Banbridge meet in the round’s second all-Ulster affair.
