WEEKEND HOCKEY:GLENANNE REBOUNDED successfully from their Irish Senior Cup exit last week by hitting five goals against C of I at Garyduff. Four goals from Shane O'Donoghue and another from Filip Jaros was plenty to see them through in their Pool A Irish Hockey League game.

John Jermyn scored for the home side on a blustery day in Cork to fire them into the lead. But the outcome ultimately came down to clinical short corner taking from O’Donoghue, who won the match for Glenanne in a four-goal 16 minute spell.

Corinthians, who lost striker David Carson after only 10 minutes to injury, also came away with an encouraging win against Cookstown in Whitechurch.

Again the match was played in difficult conditions and constant rain. Cookstown went a goal ahead in the second half before Jordan Sutton equalised for Corinthians. Then with just eight minutes on the clock Corinthians worked the ball out of their area with Ben Murphy turning smartly in the circle and hitting the home side’s winner.

Like Glenanne, YMCA quickly got back to winning ways. In what could have been a tricky visit to Farmer’s Cross, the Dublin side emerged clear 4-1 winners.

David Eakins hit Harlequins’ only goals with David Robinson netting twice for the Dublin side along with goals from Jamie Tobin and Will Powderly.

Monkstown also out-scored Banbridge at Rathdown. In a demonstration of attacking hockey, the eight-goal thriller ended 5-3 for the home side with Gareth Watkins grabbing two and Andrew Ward, Stephen Cole and David Cole adding one goal each.

Monkstown were forced to come back after Banbridge started sharply and took a 2-0 lead but by half-time it was 2-1 before Monkstown out-played the visitors in the second half.
