Cork Harlequins and Pembroke Wanderers both made wholesome starts to the European Cup winners Cup (B Divisions) tournament in Vienna yesterday but while Harlequins waltzed to a 14-0 victory over sub standard opposition from Orsundsbro of Sweden in the women's competition, the Pembroke men needed to put in greater effort to beat Mladost of Zagreb 5-1. Indeed, Pembroke - though dominant in midfield - had made only one breakthrough by the interval with Paudie Carley finding an opening for Justin Sherriff at an early stage. Furthermore, Nigel Henderson had to respond vitally to cope with a couple of swift counter incisions.

Three further strikes by Sherriff, however, put the Irish side in command in a 12-minute blitz at the start of the second half. The international centre forward first lashed in a reverse stick shot and then put away a drag flick, followed by a penalty stroke, won by Alan Giles, to make it 4-0. Allan Kershaw slotted home the fifth goal from a short corner (it was 9-1 overall) before Sasa Salvina dented the scoreline from Mladost's only set piece opportunity. While Sherriff finished with a four-goal tally, right winger Marissa Ahern went one better with five for Harlequins, who were seven up by the interval as Rachel Kohler took complete control in the pivotal role. Karen O'Brien, with a hat trick, revelled in the morning romp, too, while Jean Logue (2) Jill Hodgins (2), Joyce Kehelly and Emer Dillon were also on the score sheet. Harlequins, who should be equally untroubled by Collegians of Gibraltar tomorrow seem set for the final.
