Leonard hits the birdie trail

US TOUR:Former champion Justin Leonard charged into an early one-shot lead at the Heritage Classic in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina yesterday.

The American set the pace with a sparkling five-under-par 66 on the Harbour Town Golf Links.

Leonard struck a five-iron to two feet at the last to set up his sixth birdie of the day and finish one ahead of compatriots Anthony Kim, Stewart Cink, John Rollins and Tim Herron, plus Colombia's Camilo Villegas.

LET TOUR:Big hitting Carmen Alonso from Spain took a one-shot lead after the first round of the Spanish Open in Castellon.

The 23-year-old from Madrid fired a five-under-par 67 in still conditions on the opening morning at Panoramica Golf and Country Club.

French rookie Caroline Afonso, England's Rebecca Hudson and Denmark's Iben Tinning shared second place on four-under 68.

The Swede leads by one from American Allison Fouch, Scotland's Mhairi McKay and Norway's Suzann Pettersen.
