Irish golfer Peter Lawrie put a horrendous run of form behind him in Singapore as he made his first cut of the season at The Championship event on the European Tour.
The 40-year-old Dubliner had missed all 11 cuts on the full tour this season as well as the one event he played on the Challenge Tour after only just holding on to his tour card.
Lawrie made the cut right on the number at four under after he carded a level-par 72 in his second round on a searing hot day at the Laguna National course.
A bogey on par-four 16th ensured Lawrie had no room to play with it at the final two holes, but he made par on both of them to guarantee a first pay cheque since finishing tied for 18th spot at the Perth International last October.
Thailand’s Panuphol ‘coconut’ Pittayarat maintained his one-shot lead at the top of leaderboard on Friday after a four-under-par 68 left him on 13 under.
The 21-year-old closed his round with a long birdie putt to stay ahead of Australian Scott Hend (65), American David Lipsky (68) and Felipe Aguilar (67) of Chile at the dual sanctioned event.
“The weather is really hot today. The two birdies in my last three holes were nice to end off my round. That cools me up a bit,” Panuphol told reporters.
“I really wanted to make that long putt to take the outright lead. I am happy I did it.
“It’s nice to be putting myself in a good position heading into the last two rounds. I rather stay up there than to be chasing the lead actually. I just want to grab my chance and not let it go. I am very happy with myself at the moment.”
Gareth Maybin carded a five-under 67 to move to six under for the tournament, one shot clear of Simon Thornton, who also shot a 67. Damien McGrane missed the cut after a round of 73 left him on even par.
