Cork City - 0 Bohemians - 1: Tony Grant got Bohemians back on winning ways with a crucial headed goal as the visitors beat Cork City at Turner's Cross last night.
After a first half full of chances and plenty of exciting football Grant rose splendidly in the Cork penalty area with just four minutes of the half remaining to head home.
This was just the tonic Bohemians needed after squandering a two-goal lead against Dublin City last Friday but, with Cork's second leg InterToto Cup clash with Malmo looming large, this was exactly what Cork did not need.
Throughout the opening half the goalmouth action was non-stop. After only four minutes Michael Devine in the Cork goal was called on to smother at Grant's feet after Dave Morrisson and Glen Crowe combined to create the opportunity. From there the scene was set.
Grant was again unlucky two minutes later when Simon Webb waltzed through the Cork defence before off-loading to the striker but, again, Devine was up to the challenge.
Cork then began to find their flow as Danny Murphy released John O'Flynn with a fantastic cross but the striker volleyed wide .
Cork were full of enterprise at this stage with George O'Callaghan to the fore as he showcased his talents, dazzling the Bohemians' players at every opportunity.
The best example of his guile came after 33 minutes as he went past Ken Oman and Thomas Heary before sending in a perfect cross.
The only downside of the move was that Neale Fenn could only direct the ball against the crossbar after stretching to make contact.
Disaster then struck for Cork with the concession of Grant's goal. Cork lost their way as they struggled to make any impression in a second half that was all about the determination of the Bohemians players to protect that crucial lead.
