The dining-room at Newlands Golf Club last Friday night was a Shamrock Rovers autograph hunter's dream. At least 30 of the players from teams covering five decades dined together following the centenary golf classic held as part of the fundraising efforts for Rovers' new stadium in Tallaght.
"This stadium will open," club chairman Joe Colwell assured the faithful as names like Liam Tuohy, Paddy Ambrose, Tommy Hamilton, John Keogh, Eamonn Darcy, Eoin Hand, Denis Stephens, Alan O'Neill, Damien Richardson and Ronnie Nolan, sat and discussed the missed birdies instead of missed goals on a highly successful day for the club.
The top prize on the day went to Swan Plant Hire number one team of Fergus Doyle, Brian Daly, Mick Carney and Brian Donnelly, who had 53 points in the four-man scramble competition, one ahead of the Shenick Contractors team.
