Hamilton wins from unhappy Alonso

Motor Sport/ Formula One United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis: Lewis Hamilton moved into complete control of the Formula One world championship with a second win in a week at a US Grand Prix in Indianapolis that could prove the defining moment of the season, in more ways than one.

Hamilton, who notched his maiden win in a chaos-filled Canadian Grand Prix last Sunday, scored an ostensibly simpler win yesterday guiding his McLaren Mercedes to the chequered flag ahead of arch-rival and team-mate Fernando Alonso, but the result won't be without it's own little bit of controversy.

In the wake of the Canadian win, defending champion Alonso voiced his dissatisfaction with McLaren saying he has never felt comfortable at the team since he joined in a surprise multi-million dollar deal, at the end of last season. That discomfort he intimated has grown as the primarily British team has found a huge star in young Briton Hamilton.

Alonso reiterated those comments on Saturday in Indianapolis, adding that he feels the team have ways of preparing for qualifying and the race that weren't necessarily to his liking.

The subtext is that, as champion, he feels he should get the kind of support Michael Schumacher enjoyed at Ferrari, unequivocal, unconditional and at the expense of his team-mate.

Yesterday, midway through a tight tussle between the pair for the lead, Alonso appeared to have the beating of Hamilton into turn one. He failed to make the move stick, however, as Hamilton moved wide to cut off the Spaniard's line of attack. As the pair reached the same point on the pit straight next time round, Alonso pointedly dived towards his team on pitwall, suggesting that he was irked with both Hamilton and his own employers.

"What a dream," said Hamilton afterwards. "To come into two circuits that I didn't know, first time, to really come out with such pace and see the team moving forward and being competitive.

"They have done a fantastic job. This wouldn't have been possible without them, and the guys here did a fantastic job. It is a perfect team and I am glad I put the icing on the cake.

"Really I am just extremely pleased and proud of the team. I never thought in a million years I would be here against these drivers here. It is a great leap in my career and my life, I am thankful to my family and the guardians of the team."

Of the incident with Alonso he said: "It was extremely difficult, he was in my slipstream, it was very tough but he fought very well, very professional but in the end I was able to pull a gap, maintain it and win the race."

Alonso, meanwhile, kept his counsel over the incident: "I tried in the middle stint, I was side-by-side once, but it was not enough to overtake him. And the last stint was maybe a conservative one, it was very difficult to overtake. We'll start thinking about the French Grand Prix.

"Eight points are better than nothing. We increased the gap to Ferrari which is one of main things in this part of championships."

After the chaos in Canada, it was always on the cards that yesterday's race around the unimpressive infield of the Indianapolis F1 circuit would be a quieter event.

The first lap provided a small thrill as Ralf Schumacher collided with the Red Bull Racing car of David Coulthard and the Honda of Rubens Barrichello, but thereafter it settled into a race of small moments of rising heartbearts rather the rollercoaster ride that was Montreal.

Chiefly the interest lay with the Hamilton-Alonso show, the pair trading blows all the way through, though some 12 seconds ahead of the chasing Ferrari of Felipe Massa by the closing stages of the race.

Hamilton held his lead through turn one at the start and after a brief fightback by Alonso the Englishman carved out a delicate three-second gap before the first round of pit stops, with Hamilton emerging ahead of Alonso on lap 21.

But in the second stint, Alonso found his groove and closed rapidly on Hamilton, negotiating traffic better than Hamilton to close the gap. Then came the abortive move and the subsequent fit of pique. That was his last show of aggression in the race and after the second stop Alonso seemed to settle for a disgruntled second. Third place was taken by Ferrari's Felipe Massa, with team-mate Kimmi Raikkonen fourth.
