DERRY City had to come from behind to overcome Cork at the Brandywell yesterday. And the home side can thank their latest young recruit for the second weeks in succession.
Twenty one year old, Sean Hargan, who netted a hat trick against Galway last weekend, scored two goals in a five minute spell during the second half to secure victory for the Brandywell club.
But before Derry got into full flow in the second half, it was Cork who dominated and had they taken their chances, they, could have led 3-0 at the break.
Pat Morley crashed an easy chance off the under side of the Derry crossbar from only five yards in the 7th minute before" Anthony Connolly broke the deadlock three minutes later.
John Caulfield made an incisive break down the left and his low cross was wide footed home by the unmarked winger.
Caulfield squandered a gilt edged chance in the 39th minute, his close range shot crashing against the body of Derry keeper, Tony O'Dowd, after the Cork man had broken clear.
After the break, however, that all changed as Derry took control thanks mainly to a double substitution. Kevin McKeever replaced, the ineffective Gary Beckett in the Derry front line, while young Darren Kelly deputised for Paul Curran in defence.
And McKeever's physical presence at the front appeared to turn the game in favour of the home side.
Hargan, who spent a season with Omagh Town, boosted confidence level then he netted the equaliser in the 71st minute following a superb Ryan cross from the right.
And four minutes later, the same pairing combined with Hargan hooking the ball home after a number of players had missed Semple's low centre.
