GOLF:PÁDRAIG HARRINGTON just about salvaged his FedEx Cup prospects – although he believes he will need to finish in the top 20 tomorrow – as he made the cut right on the bubble at the Wyndham Championships in North Carolina last night. Typically, the Dubliner's effort was far from straightforward with a late brace of birdies required to keep the three-time Major winner's season alive.
Coming down the stretch, Harrington was staring into the abyss at one under, two outside the projected cut. But despite his well-publicised troubles with his swing, Harrington is nothing if not resilient and knocked his approach to 20 feet at the par five 15th to get moving in the right direction.
Still one outside the number, Harrington then holed a raking 15-footer at the penultimate hole to sneak over the line. There was still some trouble to be negotiated at the last, where his tee shot again found the rough, but a second round 68 keeps him in the tournament. His three under total was still some some nine shots adrift of Tommy Gainey, but at least now Harrington has a chance of climbing inside the top 125 in the rankings ahead of the lucrative FedEx series.
Gainey was among the early starters and added a 65 to his opening 63 to open a three shot lead on the field. Having been locked in with Jeff Quinney overnight, Gainey shaved another five shots off the par score to return to the clubhouse on 12 under.
