Boxing: Irish heavyweight champion Stephen Reynolds had a remarkable 4-1 decision given against him in his bout against Frenchman Jackson Chanet in a qualifier for the Sydney Olympics at the Liverpool Arena yesterday.

To Chanet's credit, he promptly raised the Sligo-man's arm, suggesting that he was the true winner. "Yes, I feel robbed," said Reynolds whose twin brother, light heavy Alan, will try for a Sydney place in Venice next week.

John Duddy, beaten in the Irish light middle final by Michael Roche, our only Olympic qualifier so far, advanced his bid for a place in the European Championships in Tampere Finland in May when he ousted a Czech, Jiffi Svacina, 10-3. The Derry-man now meets Scot Stephen McGuire in the semi-finals.

Swimming: Swimming goods manufacturer Speedo are surprised the Australian Olympic Committee has decided to test the legality of their new bodysuits. Joe Fields, president of Speedo International who are supplying most of the Australian team with neck to ankle bodysuits, said they had worked with world swimming's governing body FINA for the last four years on all swim suits.

Many world class swimmers, including Ian Thorpe and Michael Klim, now use them and last week's world short course championships in Athens were dominated by swimmers in bodysuits. But the AOC is worried that despite FINA approving the bodysuits, its regulations are too vague and athletes who lose to those wearing them could take legal action.

Boxing: The Death in Dublin of Benny Carabini removes one of this country's central amateur boxing personalities for over 50 years.

As a bantamweight boxer of exceptional skill, and later as coach and administrator, he was highly influential in establishing the international profile of the sport.

After an outstanding juvenile career he went on to represent Ireland on eight occasions at a time when there was a greater depth of talent at the lighter weights than at any time before or since.

Among the highlights was a points win over the Italian Vincenzo Dall'Osso in Milan (1951). Dall'Osso went on to win the European title, beating John Kelly of Belfast.

Carabini retired soon afterwards to concentrate on coaching and was responsible for the development of many fine international boxers.
