Virgin's founder and chairman, the canny Richard Branson, revealed the move was prompted by British Airways' recent decision to revamp its planes with artistic images from around the world.

"We were literally inundated with phone calls, letters and customer comments asking us to pick up the flag and fly it proudly," he said.
