CYCLING:  RIDERS, FANS and sporting historians have the chance to obtain a fascinating account from each of the 56 editions of the FBD Insurance Rás thanks to the release of a comprehensive book. Written by the late Jim Traynor, The Rás - A Day by Day Diary of Ireland's Great Bike Race details the action and results of every stage held since the inaugural two-day event in 1953.

Traynor was a former competitor, journalist, cycling official and Rás chief judge. He worked on the book until his death in 2003. His wife, Bridie, is the main force behind its publication, which has been updated to include a report of every edition held since his passing.

The book will be launched in mid-November in Dublin. Hardcover and paperback versions can be ordered by emailing admin2009@fbdinsuranceras.com.

In other news, Simon Evans and Fearghal O'Nuallain will this Sunday begin the first Irish circumnavigation of the globe by bicycle. All going to plan, the duo will clock up over 30,000 kilometres as they pass through 30 countries. The Revolution Cycle trip is expected to take 18 months and is to raise funds for Aware.
