Schools rugby Connacht Senior and Junior Cup finals/Colaiste Iognaid - 16 Sligo Grammar -3: Coláiste Iognaid from Galway city captured their sixth Connacht Schools' Senior Cup title with a surprisingly easy victory at the Sportsground yesterday.Iognaid absorbed all Sligo Grammar threw at them before pulling away after the restart.

It was another disappointing final appearance for the Sligo school, who have now lost six of the last 11 deciders. They went into the match favourites and for most of the opening period they looked the sharper outfit with fullback Ross Butler, catching the eye. While they put together good moves, their decision-making left a lot to be desired.

Iognaid led 6-3 at the break with outhalf Cormac O'Beirne edging them in front after seven minutes with a 35-metre penalty. Sligo Grammar drew level after 14 minutes when Butler landed a penalty from the 22.

O'Beirne landed another penalty to edge Iognaid in front at the break and they struck for the decisive score two minutes after the restart when number eight Hugh O'Donnellan made the hard yards for centre Robert Hurley to dive over. That was to be the only try of the game, with O'Beirne landing the conversion to make it 13-3 before the Coláiste Iognaid outhalf wrapped up the issue with another penalty.
