Michael Hoey joined Jonathan Caldwell on six-under-par as the Irish challenge held up on the second day of European Tour qualifying school. The pair trail Sweden's Oskar Henningsson by five strokes but share sixth place at the PGA Golf de Catalunya.

Michael McGeady is on five-under while Simon Thornton remains in contention on two-under.

Henningsson is three shots clear of Federico Colombo, Branden Grace and Eirik Tage Johansen after 36 holes of this stern six round examination.

"It was a very pleasing finish to another good day," Henningsson said after a second successive 66. "My round was similar to yesterday's, in that I only really started picking up shots on the back nine. I played well enough on the front nine, but the putts didn't drop.

"It's important not to get frustrated though, because I was creating so many birdie chances that sooner or later I knew I would start taking them. Then to finish with a ten foot birdie putt on the last was extra special - I'll definitely sleep well tonight!"

Danny Willett, the former world amateur number one, is another player alongside Caldwell and Hoey on six under. The 21-year-old English rookie, a former Walker Cup player, fired a four-under 67 on the Red Course.

Willett's fondness for Spain extends back to 2007 when he won the Spanish amateur title. He then finished 19th in the European Tour's Andalucian Open and 10th in the Spanish Open earlier this season, both as an amateur, and is now aiming to seal a full-time place on the main circuit at the first time of asking.

"Spain has been very good to me over the last year or so," said Willett, who won stage one of the Q-school process in Germany back in September. "I have good memories here and hopefully I can add to those this week.

"I was prepared for the tour school, although I feel the final is less stressful than stage two. If I didn't get through that last weekend I would have struggled for starts. At the very least I have a Challenge Tour card but I'm aiming higher than that."
