BOXING:Three Irish boxers are just one fight away from winning at least bronze at today's European Cadet Championships quarter-finals in Siofeck, Hungary.
David Joe Joyce (St Michael's, Athy), Patrick Harkin (Dunfanaghy) and Conrad Cummins (Clonoe) are through to today's last-eight deciders.
But Neil Walker, Sean Duffy, Charlie Haggerty,Tommy McCarthy, Ruari Dalton and Bernard Roe are out following last-16 reversals.
Roe won his fight against Sweden's Diamal Machmudov but received a facial injury and has been withdrawn, and Dalton was desperately unlucky to lose on points to Hungarian Kale Sandor.
Light welter Joyce stopped Slovakia's David Gazi on the 15-point rule to set up a quarter-final with Alex Grigoichik and Cummins will meet Estonia's Rodions Ippolitov. Lightweight Harkin will face Bulgaria's Sergi Georgieve in his quarter-final following his preliminary round points win over Vladimiv Vlaic of Azerbaijan.
"We have performed very well to get to the quarter finals and fingers crossed we can bring home some medals," said IABA High Performance director Gary Keegan.
