Uefa Cup Quarter-finals, second leg/Tottenham (1) v Sevilla (2):Martin Jol has called on English football to make a concerted stand against the over-zealous policing that has marred recent matches across Europe. The Tottenham coach believes his club's fans were attacked indiscriminately by Spanish police during last Thursday's Uefa Cup quarter-final first leg against Sevilla.
In his programme notes for tonight's return leg, Jol said: "You, our fans, have been fantastic ambassadors for the club all across Europe this season and it has made a real difference to have you there, in real numbers, and at home, raising us when we need it most."
There were seven arrests following the clashes inside the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Among those held was a 31-year-old computer programmer, Paul Inskip, who was struck while trying to take a photograph of the Tottenham team bus. Jol said: "This guy wanted to take a picture and they didn't even warn him - he lost three or four teeth. There were no clashes with fans. Can you remember English fans going to a foreign country, having no clashes with fans and then still getting bashed? That is what we have to expect now and in the future if you are English. That is why we have to stand up for ourselves."
Sevilla will have 1,200 fans inside White Hart Lane tonight. Tottenham have stressed there were no problems between the supporters in Spain and there will be no extra security or policing for this evening's match.
Tottenham must overcome a 2-1 deficit to progress to the semi-finals and their defence is so badly depleted Ledley King will come straight into the team despite not having played since St Stephen's Day. Lee Young-pyo's knee injury and a suspected torn hip muscle to Paul Stalteri have left Jol short of cover, although Danny Murphy does return to the squad. Phil Ifil is set to make only his second appearance of the season at right-back.
Freddie Kanoute will lead the line against his former club.
