Kelly saves Dubliners

WATERFORD UNITED....0 BOHEMIANS...1: A man-of-the-match performance by Bohemians goalkeeper Shay Kelly earned the Dubliners their first win in eight games as they just shaded victory at the RSC.

Bohemians got the only goal on 22 minutes after the ball ran free from a tackle by Pat Purcell on Tony Grant inside the area. Goalkeeper Dan Connor attempted to clear but his shot ricocheted off the raised foot of the inrushing Grant into the net.

Waterford responded by attacking with vigour, and only three superb saves by the visitors' goalkeeper kept his goal intact.

On 27 minutes, Kelly pulled off a superb reflex save to turn Kevin Waters' blistering shot out for a corner. He turned over a dipping, 25-yard free from Alan Reynolds on 38 minutes and, two minutes later, stretched to save from Vinnie Sullivan.

United had legitimate claims for a penalty after four minutes when Darryl Murphy was pulled back by Colin Hawkins as he headed towards goal, but referee Anthony Buttimer waved play on.

Bohemians began the second half with a confident display of cross-field passing and, on 57 minutes, the unmarked Grant headed over the Waterford crossbar from close range.

While United were unlucky not to score in the first half, they created very little in the second period until the latter stages and the closest they came to unlocking the Bohemians defence came 10 minutes from time when Murphy volleyed wide from 15 yards from a cross by Reynolds.

In the five minutes of time added on, United besieged the Bohemians' goal but efforts by Banville and Sullivan failed to secure an equaliser.
