RACING: The powerful Ballydoyle stable of Aidan O'Brien runs no fewer than four runners - headed by Grand Reward - in today's Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, but Kheleyf is napped to thwart their efforts when he steps up to Group One company.
The David Loder-trained youngster recorded a convincing victory in a minor event at Doncaster last month to book his place in the line-up. The full-brother to the brilliant, but ill-fated, Bint Allayl did not beat much on Town Moor but he could not have been more impressive, cruising through from last place to lead inside the final furlong and win with his head in his chest.
Kheleyf scored on his debut at York but sandwiched between his wins was an odds-on defeat at Royal Ascot. However, there were excuses that day as connections thought he had gone a bit weak just before the Royal meeting. Kheleyf has been given time to develop with today's race in mind and his Doncaster run will have put him spot-on.
He will not have matters all his own way with Three Valleys out to put a disappointing display behind the O'Brien-trained One Cool Cat at the Curragh behind him and Auditorium in the line-up. Auditorium finished a good neck second to Lucky Story over seven furlongs in the Champagne Stakes to warrant being supplemented for the race.
The drop back to six furlongs in the Middle Park should be in Auditorium's favour and he looks the one to give Kheleyf most to think about.
Kalaman, a major flop when favourite for the Juddmonte International Stakes at York last time, can regain the winning thread in the Shadwell Stud Joel Stakes. He had previously finished an unlucky-in-running second to Zafeen in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, a repeat of which would be good enough.
Meanwhile, yesterday's Newmarket meeting produced a thrilling finish to the Group One Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes with Carry On Katie just prevailing under an inspired ride from Frankie Dettori.
Majestic Desert threw down a strong challenge to the Jeremy Noseda-trained favourite close home, but Dettori's mount just held on by a short head. Badminton stayed on to be third, a length and three-quarters away.
China Eyes was out of the stalls very quickly and took the field along at a fair clip, with Carry On Katie always travelling sweetly on her outside. Dettori let the winner stride on three furlongs from home, although she did not get away from the field.
Majestic Desert had plenty to do, but Kieren Fallon got a serious tune out of her coming out of the dip and it looked at one stage that she might reel in Carry On Katie. Badminton, who had finished second to the winner in the Lowther Stakes at York, ran a race full of promise considering she is thought to need an extra furlong. French challenger Much Faster was a major disappointment, having every chance before backpedalling.
Carry On Katie, now unbeaten in three starts, is a general 10 to 1 chance for next season's 1,000 Guineas.
Kieren Fallon will miss Cambridgeshire day at Newmarket tomorrow after his appeal against a one-day suspension proved in vain at the Jockey Club yesterday morning.
The champion jockey picked up a one-day ban for careless riding at Pontefract last week and will now miss the ride on Akshar in the big handicap at Headquarters. He did, however, have his deposit returned.
