Golf:Anthony Kim will head into the final round of the US PGA Tour Greenbrier Classic with a one-shot lead after firing a blistering third-round 62 today. The 26-year-old picked up eight birdies in his bogey-free round which, after posting 69s in each of his first two rounds, moved him onto 10 under overall.
Scott Stallings was hot on his heels a shot back after a blemish-free four-under-par 66. Gary Woodland (67) and halfway co-leader Webb Simpson (69) were two shots off the pace, with fellow Americans Jimmy Walker (62), Bill Haas (65) and Chris Couch (67) one stroke further adrift on seven under.
South African Trevor Immelman, the 2008 US Masters champion, was well in contention at the midway point of his round but a double-bogey and four bogeys on his back nine looked to have put paid to his hopes in the tournament.
Simpson was joint leader after two rounds along with Brendon de Jonge, but the Zimbabwean slipped down the field after a nightmare start to his third round. He double-bogeyed the par-four fifth and also dropped shots at the third, seventh and ninth holes before stemming the flow of bogeys to finish with a two-over-par 72 and a share of 11th spot — five shots off the pace.
Kim, a three-time PGA Tour winner birdied five of his last nine holes to end a sunny afternoon in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains and was delighted to surge to the top of the leaderboard after missing much of last season because of an injured left thumb which required surgery.
"I was just hitting smart golf shots," he told reporters after recording eight birdies in a flawless display. "I started hitting some fades off the tee, which on this course you need to do, and I made a couple of putts.
"I hit the smart shot, sometimes not even going at a couple of pins, which is hard for me to do. I got away with some poor swings because of some good lines. Hopefully I can do that again tomorrow."
