Former distance running ace Ingrid Kristiansen has dismissed any chance of a "clean" athlete breaking the world 10,000 metres record because of allegations of drug use against the Chinese holder.
Kristiansen, the world's greatest-ever distance runner, has no reservations that the 30 minutes barrier can be broken.
But Paula Radcliffe's attempt to do just that during the 10,000 metres European Challenge in Barakaldo, Spain last night was spoiled by gale force winds.
The Bedford athlete had hoped to better Kristiansen's longstanding European record, but was frustrated from the starting pistol by the awful weather conditions which restricted the time of her race win to a frustrating 30 minutes 55.80 seconds.
Kristiansen, who set the current European record of 30:13.74, doubts the 29:31.78 of China's Wang Junxia will be bettered by an athlete not under suspicion of using illegal substances.
The Norwegian believes the record of Wang is out of the reach of Radcliffe. "No, I don't think that will be possible. I think 29 minutes 45 seconds is possible for a `clean' female athlete," said Kristiansen.
