A goal in each half provided the foundation for this narrow victory for Laois over neighbours Carlow in a splendid game at Dr Cullen Park, Carlow yesterday. An attendance of 4,000 saw a game played at almost championship fervour.

Although Laois were depleted they were nevertheless the physically stronger side and it was this which enabled them to fashion a slender win.

The Laois goals came from All-Ireland minor star Stephen Kelly - making his senior inter-county debut - after five minutes and substitute Damian Holohan in the 51st minute.

Carlow missed a penalty just on half-time to leave the sides level 08 to 1-5 at the interval. Over the hour the teams were level six times, but it was an extra edge in physique and their finishing skills which tilted the balance in favour of Laois.
