Clare SFC final / St Senan's, Kilkee 3-8 Kilmurry Ibrickane 1-9: St Senan's from Kilkee claimed their eighth title when they defeated the reigning Clare and Munster champions, Kilmurry Ibrickane, by five points at Cusack Park yesterday.
Kilkee played with a shape and purpose throughout and, even though they had to depend on an injury-time goal by substitute Jimmy Larkin to kill off the opposition, they were the better side.
A Ger Keane goal after only six minutes set the tone for the day. Kilmurry pulled one back in the 25th minute through Johnny Daly from the penalty spot.
That score ensured Kilkee had the minimal lead, 1-4 to 1-3, at the half-time interval. From the restart the winners introduced Gearóid Lynch into their forward line and it proved an inspired move.
The 20-year-old found the back of the Kilmurry net in the 36th minute and by the end of the third quarter Kilkee led 2-7 to 1-3.
Kilmurry were guilty of squandering chances for most of the half and had to wait until the 46th minute to record their opening second-half score, a Johnny Daly pointed free.
Kilkee's dominance diminished for a time as Kilmurry added three unanswered points, reducing the deficit to just a goal by the 53rd minute. Kilkee substitute Michael Keane fisted a point in the 58th minute. Enda Coughlan replied in kind at the other end moments later.
Paul O'Dwyer, a second-half substitute for Kilmurry, kicked another point in injury-time to put his side within two, but Larkin's late goal dashed any hopes of the two in a row on a day when St Senan's displayed a hunger and determination befitting champions.
