Marist Athlone ... 2-10 Scoil Mhuire, Clane ... 0-7 A quality display of attacking football from Athlone's Marist College allowed them to cruise to a comfortable victory in their Leinster colleges football match at Tubberclare, Westmeath, yesterday

While both teams looked competent going forward, it was the Marist College who made the most of things.

The sides were equally matched in the early period of the game, with the score 0-4 each after 20 minutes.

But as half-time approached, Marist scored a goal through full back Darragh Donnelly after he burst through a slack Scoil Mhuire defence before rifling the ball past goalkeeper Shane McCormack.

Marist went in 1-4 to 0-5 ahead at the break, but Scoil Mhuire still looked more than capable of defeating their Westmeath opponents.

But the Kildare side never really got going in the second half and Marist continued where they left off, scoring a further six points and a great goal after Paul Kenny and Dara Blane combined to set up full forward Kevin Hogan.

That goal effectively put the tie beyond their opponents.

Scoil Mhuire continued to press for a goal, but to no avail, as the Marist rearguard held strong for the remainder of the game.
