DAVID McCANN continued on his winning ways yesterday when he was out on his own again, at the finish of the Meath Grand Prix at Navan.

After five laps of the 16 miles circuit through Slane, McCann, of the Phoenix Club, Belfast, was almost a minute ahead of last year's winner, David Peelo of Sorrento. On the hill in Slane first time around Richie McCauley led from Peelo, but at the end of the lap a funeral brought traffic in Navan to a halt and officials neutralised the racing over a five miles detour around the town.

The decisive breakaway group formed on the third lap when eight of the 67 starters forged ahead, but next time around McCann, Peelo, Lyttle and Barry Whelan went on. Whelan was first to lose contact and on the hill in Slane for the last time, Lyttle could not stay with McCann and Peelo. Then, at the top of the final rise at Barrettstown, Peelo had no answer to a surge of power from McCann and over the final four miles the latter, who set a new 25 miles time trial record during the week of 51 minutes and five seconds, gained 59 seconds on Peelo.

McCann now has the final Olympic trial in the Manx International over 113 miles in the Isle of Man on Thursday.
