SCOTT McCARRON carded a second successive five under par 66 to claim the second round lead in the £1 million Kemper Open in Potomac, Maryland, yesterday.
The 30 year old Californian, needing victory to be sure of qualifying for next month's US Open and joint leader overnight with Billy Andrade and Jay Williamson, recovered from a nightmare start to shoot an eagle and five birdies.
McCarron, who won his first Tour event at New Orleans in March, suffered a bogey at the first hole and leads Williams by a shot after carding a 10 under aggregate of 132.
Veteran Gil Morgan (65) and former Masters champion Larry Mize (67) were three strokes behind, while Open champion John Daly, using a new "zero iron", was among a group four shots adrift.
"It's one of the best clubs I've fever hit," said Daly. "I've been needing something to get a little more distance on some of the longer par fours where I can't hit driver.
"I'm hitting the tee ball better than ever, hitting a lot of fairways, which is giving me a chance to hit a lot of greens."
