Scotland coach Ian McGeechan believes the financial co-operation which brought Samoa to Britain could herald the beginning of a co-ordinated global fixture list.

Both the Scottish and Welsh hierarchies have sponsored the Samoan tour because the Pacific country struggled with finances after a dispute over pay and insurance.

Consequently, the Samoans have just two members of last year's World Cup squad in their ranks for today's game at Murrayfield.

McGeechan sees much significance for the future in the success of Scotland and Wales' co-operation over the Samoa tour.

He said: "(Australia coach) Rod Macqueen and I spoke about this after last weekend's international.

"We also agreed it would be a positive step forward if we could produce a co-ordinated fixture programme between the two hemispheres.

"It would be an injustice to Samoa to say that the side is weakened. What they've lost is experience, not talent.

"People will be pretty naive if they want to write Samoa off," said McGeechan.

"I'm aware that Samoa will cause us a few problems in one-to-one situations because of their physical presence. They are able to score tries with the ball in hand because they are natural footballers."
