US Masters update: Kenny Perry birdied the last hole to tie fellow American Chad Campbell for the second round lead on nine-under par at the US Masters where Rory McIlroy suffered a late collapse.
Perry almost holed his approach at the uphill 18th before sinking a three-footer to complete a five-under 67 for 135.
Campbell, who led by one stroke overnight on 65, opened a five-shot advantage with four birdies in the first 10 holes before bogeying the 11th, 12th and 17th as gusty winds blew through Augusta National.
He then drained a 20-foot birdie putt to end the round on a high and finish with a 70.
McIlroy had stormed up the leaderboard and was four-under at one stage with four birdies and an eagle at the 13th on his card. However the 19-year-old four-putted the treacherous 16th for double-bogey before making a complete mess of the 18th where he made a triple-bogey.
The Holywood teenager found the greenside bunker and failed to get out after a delicate effort. From there he hit a semi-shank as the ball races across the green before he compounded the disappointment with a three-putt.
It all added up to a second round 73 for a one-over aggregate. It looks as though he will still make the cut.
Graeme added a 73 to his opening 69 to reach the halfway stage on two under par. It was a frustrating afternoon as the 29-year-old dropped three shots in the last five holes.
Most disappointing was a six on the long 15th, where he went for the green in two and saw his ball sail 40 yards over the green.
"I thought it might reach the water," said McDowell. "I played it as wind against, but it's very difficult to pick it and it left me in a horrible place. I was happy to walk off with a six in the end."
He needed two chips to make the fringe, sent a putt seven-foot by, but made it coming back.
"A 73 is a little disappointing, but I think the course is only going to get trickier.
"That's Augusta - it gives and takes away just as fast. I couldn't believe Chad had got to 11 under, but I see he's leaking some oil now."
Tiger Woods, meanwhile, bogeyed the last for the second day running to sign for a 72 which leaves the world number one seven off the lead alongside McDowell.
Playing his first major since knee surgery in June, Woods began the day five off the pace and was unable to mount a charge.
Woods twice followed birdies with bogeys on the front nine and balanced another birdie at the par-five 15th with a bogey at 18.
"I need to play a little bit better than I did today," the four-times champion said afterwards. "I need to sink some more putts."
The biggest 36-hole deficit Woods has overcome at Augusta was six strokes on his way to victory in 2005.
McIlroy’s playing partner Anthony Kim enjoyed a glorious day where he carded no less than a record 11 birdies in a round of 65 to get his tournament back on track and be just five off the lead on four under.
Pádraig Harrington made a stuttering start to be two-over after 11 holes, one-under overall.
American Todd Hamilton, the 2004 British Open winner, returned a 70 for 138. Also on six under was 2007 US Open champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina (through 10 holes) and American Jim Furyk (eight).
Scotland’s Sandy Lyle, the 1988 champion, bogeyed four holes in a row from the fourth before reeling off five successive birdies from the 13th for a 70 and 142.
