ULSTER MFC FIRST ROUND/Monaghan 2-7 Fermanagh 2-3: DESPITE TRAILING by 2-3 to 0-3 at half-time, Monaghan prevented Fermanagh scoring in the second half to run out winners at Brewster Park yesterday.
One of Monaghan's two half-time substitutes Ciarán Hughes followed up a 36th-minute pointed free with a 39th-minute goal from a penalty that signalled the start of the Monaghan revival.
A Dermot Malone goal in the 45th minute gave Monaghan a 2-4 to 2-3 lead and they never looked back.
Monaghan enjoyed an early lead (0-3 to 0-2), full forward Aaron McCarey scored all three points before his opposite number, Tómas Corrigan, found the net in the 21st minute and then converting a 29th-minute penalty. They did get the ball in the net late on, but the score was disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper.
