Schoolgirls' Hockey: Muckross Park won the Leinster Junior A League final at Grange Road yesterday, beating Wesley College 4-3 on penalty strokes after the teams were level at 2-2 following extra time, writes Mary Hannigan.

The short corner count - 17 to Wesley, just two to Muckross - told much of the story of the game, but it was Muckross who took an early lead in the first half through Nora Morgan.

Harriet Treacy equalised for Wesley, but they fell behind again in the first period of extra time when Gillian Coleman scored, only for Wesley captain Rachel Scott to level from her team's final short corner.

But Muckross prevailed, with two saves from Aoife Lambert in the strokes competition helping them clinch the cup.
