Women's Hockey Irish Senior Cup final: Having created, over the last seven seasons, one of the great and most absorbing rivalries in Irish hockey, there's not much Hermes and Pegasus don't know about each other.

But by the end of the weekend - by which time their seconds will have squared up in the Odlums Irish Junior Cup final and their firsts will have contested the senior Irish final - that "familiarity" will be even greater.

Their first teams have met nine times in the last six years, either in the club finals or the Irish Senior Cup, and, ahead of Sunday's final, the record is beautifully poised: they've each won four and lost four, and have drawn once.

They have, though, met in only one previous cup final, the 1999 decider, a game that had it all in terms of drama and controversy. Hermes won 3-2 after extra time.

Surprisingly, considering they have been Irish club champions for the past six years (Hermes won the club finals for the first time last year after a Pegasus five-in-a-row), neither side has won the cup since 1999, both going on to lose two finals each.

"If you want to go on 'stats'," said Hermes goalkeeper Tara Browne, "we've won two finals when we were the underdogs and lost two when we were the favourites."

Hermes beat Muckross (1997) and Pegasus (1999), when they were expected to lose, but lost to Cork Harlequins (2000) and Loreto (2002) when they were fancied to win.

And the last time Pegasus were in a final, in 2001, they fell victim to one of the biggest upsets in recent Irish Senior Cup history, losing to Ballymoney on strokes.

Last time they met, in May's club finals' decider, Hermes won 1-0, but since then Pegasus have retained their provincial title, their seventh-in-a-row, while Hermes have relinquished theirs, finishing third in Leinster.

"There's really probably nothing between us," said Browne, "and at this stage we know each other inside out. I'd be surprised if there was more than a goal between us on Sunday."

Both clubs have been boosted by the return of their Irish internationals, who only got back from New Zealand on Monday. The Hermes trio of Jenny Burke, Linda Caulfield and Fiona Connery turned up for training on Tuesday night, while Katherine Maybin is back for Pegasus.

Which of them, though, will complete a hectic few weeks by collecting an Irish Senior Cup winner's medal is, frankly, anybody's guess.
