The name O'Brien has been synonymous with the juvenile scene this season but yesterday on the opening session of the annual Bellewstown meeting it was Kevin O'Brien, rather than the Ballydoyle maestro Aidan, who supplied the winner of the Kilsharvan EBF Maiden when Newpark Lady powered home under John Murtagh.
This was a first two-year-old winner for the former rider, who retired from the saddled last year. The bargain buy of "around £2,000" which touched even money in the ring swept into the lead for the three-times champion at the half-way stage before forging steadily clear to score by four-and-a-half lengths.
Sarraaf which disappointed somewhat in his first handicap for Kevin Prendergast at the Curragh on Friday evening successfully reverted to maiden company when scoring narrowly under Stephen Craine in a blanket finish to the Murphy Sand And Gravel Maiden.
Following a Steward's inquiry Pat Smullen was suspended for two days for careless riding.
