2000 B&H International Open: It seemed that all Padraig Harrington had to do in the final round of the International Open at The Belfry was to tee up the ball, but he never got to do it.

Five shots clear of Jose Maria Olazabal after three rounds, Harrington was on the driving range preparing for his final round when it was discovered he hadn't signed his card in the first round and he was disqualified. The discovery was made after the hotel requested the card of Harrington's course record so that it could be displayed on the wall inside the hotel.

On the 16th fairway in the final round, Harrington's drive finished on the fairway and on a slight downslope. He opted to use the rule to place his ball on top of a tuft of grass but, as he addressed the ball, he deemed it to have moved and called a penalty shot on himself. The penalty meant he finished in fifth position, rather than tied-third in an event won by Vijay Singh.

2000 US Open

In the second round of the US Open at Pebble Beach, Harrington called a penalty shot on himself after he thought that the ball had moved as he addressed it.

The incident occurred as he prepared to play a pitch shot on the ninth green. Despite calling the penalty on himself, Harrington went on to finish in tied-fifth position, his first top-five finish in a major.
