The Grange Golf Club in Rathfarnham has proved to be a happy hunting ground for Christy O'Connor junior over many years. Back in 1983 he set the course record when winning the Links Pro-Am with a seven-under-par 61. On that occasion he covered the six par threes in a relatively mundane one-under with five pars and a birdie.
Between stops on the US Seniors Tour earlier this month, O'Connor played the course again as part of the Arthur Andersen client outing and his figures for the short holes were 3-3-1-2-2-3, and he shot 63. After parring the first and second he scored the 13th ace of his career at the sixth, birdied the eighth and 11th and missed a five-footer for another birdie at the 15th.
As he played off forward tees and switched between different amateur groups, his 63 will not constitute a record for the recently-modified course.
