Rowing: A majestic performance in the senior eight saw NUIG successfully defend their Wylie Cup title as overall men's winners of the Irish Universities Championships at a balmy O'Brien's Bridge in Clare yesterday.

The men's eights titles went to different clubs, Trinity winning the intermediate and UCC the novice, but NUIG's commanding win in the senior eight from Trinity and Queen's University secured the overall prize.

The women's coxed fours saw a similar division of the spoils, UCD taking the Bank of Ireland Cup after a predictably emphatic win in the senior grade. Trinity won the intermediate and UCC the novice.

Paul O'Brien of NUI Maynooth teamed up with Aodhán Kelly in the men's senior double sculls and won the intermediate single himself.
