THE holders, Old Wesley chose the occasion of the Old Belvedere Floodlit Cup to reveal an impressive new quartered strip with red markings and suitably illuminated the game with an all-round display which dumped St Mary's out of the competition after this second round encounter at Anglesea Road last night.
Old Wesley full-back, Niall Farren, shone like a beacon throughout and kicked his side into an early lead with two identical penalties from the left touchline in the third and sixth minutes.
Centre Nicky Barry thumped, a long-range penalty against the near post for St Mary's before Old Wesley increased their lead on the quarter hour mark. Left winger Ronan Browne embarked on a fine solo run from the halfway line which culminated in a weaving burst over the end line. Farren protected his 100 per cent record with the conversion before Barry reduced the deficit with two penalty kicks in the latter stages of the opening period.
A pedestrian second half was enlivened temporarily when Browne crossed for another try in the 53rd minute following an astute run and deft pass from centre Colin Younger. Farren converted before adding another accurate penalty in the 62nd minute. However, he finally blotted his copybook with a missed penalty attempt five minutes from the finish.
