Chloe and Sam Magee exit World Championships

The Irish pair faced the tough challenge of taking on Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir

Sam and Chloe Magee crashed out of the badminton World Championships in Glasgow after losing in the last 16, despite taking it to a deciding set.

The Irish siblings beat the Japanese pair Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino, ranked 22nd in the world, 21-13 16-21 21-15 in the round of 32, but then came up against the number three ranked duo of Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia.

Earlier this year the duo won Ireland’s first European medal, taking the mixed-doubles bronze at the European Championships in Kolding, Denmark.

After losing the opening set 21-19, the Donegal pair hit back in the second set, winning 21-26 to take it to a decider.

However it wasn’t to be for the Irish pair as the Indonesians turned on the style at the Emirates Arena.

Ahmad and Natsir out on a clinic when it mattered most, dismissing the Magees 21-10 in the final set to book their place in the quarter-finals.
