Men's Hockey Round-up:It is all looking pretty tight at the top of the Leinster Senior League. While Pembroke and Three Rock Rovers have played seven matches each and take the top spot and second place respectively, third-placed Glenanne still have a game in hand in the run-in to Christmas.
All three leading clubs won with varying degrees of ease over the weekend, Pembroke clearly wallowing in home advantage and a great deal more fire-power than their Bray opponents.
Gordon Elliott fired in four goals in the 11-0 thrashing as Bray continue to struggle.
As has been the case for a few years now, the teams promoted from Division Two invariably struggle to bridge the gap between the two leagues upon their arrival in the top flight. Bray are conceding goals at an average rate of about four a game.
Glenanne's 3-0 win over the Trinity students keeps them breathing down Pembroke's necks.
Stephen Butler, Graham Shaw and Kieron O'Malley grabbed a goal each to keep their side in contention, while at Grange Road, the goalscoring activities of Mitch Darling and Peter Blakeney are sure to have pleased Irish coach Dave Passmore. The duo hit two each in Rovers' 4-0 win over YMCA.
With Railway Union drawing 1-1 against Fingal, that leaves the bottom of the table as tight as the top.
Trinity and Bray have yet to get off the mark after six and seven games respectively and have zero points, while Railway and YMCA are just marginally above them with four points each from five games played.
Meanwhile, at Newpark school, Ulster finished off a highly successful weekend with their fourth win from four matches in the under-18 interprovincial championship.
Played in high winds and rain, the Ulster teenagers beat Leinster 3-1 yesterday to keep their perfect record over the weekend. The Ulster under-18s followed successfully on from the under-16s, who also won their competition without defeat.
They drew both games yesterday but won their opening two matches on Friday and Saturday to win the round robin event.
