Philip recovery a fillip for Scottish underdogs

Toulouse v EdinburgEdinburgh centre Tom Philip believes an ongoing groin injury was a greater danger to his Heineken Cup hopes than the recent citing with Scotland.

He was cited for a high challenge on Brian O'Driscoll in the final Six Nations game of the season in Dublin. The disciplinary procedure left a doubt over his inclusion in the Edinburgh squad for the last-eight clash against the reigning European Cup holders.

However, the 20-year-old was cleared by the Six Nations committee and will take his place in Frank Hadden's team in France.

But Philip, who has shrugged off his injury, maintains he was confident the committee would rule in his favour.

"It is a relief because I was quite surprised to be cited in the first place," he said. "I didn't think it was a terribly bad challenge but, at least, it's all over now."

Edinburgh became the first Scottish professional team to reach the knockout stages of the competition with five straight opening wins in their pool. But the final group game saw them crash 33-0 to today's opposition.

However, Philip is adamant that result will have no bearing on the outcome of the sudden-death game with Toulouse.

He said: "We have to forget that game now. They were different circumstances then. The team did not have a great game over there, we just didn't perform.

"But we know we can do a better job this time round and that is what we will be aiming for. It would be a shame to go out of the competition now after doing so well to reach the quarter-finals.

"But we have a positive approach and we are looking forward to it. It won't be easy against the European champions but we will give it our best shot."
