The England and Glasgow Rangers star is said to have slapped the woman across the face after she approached the car he was sitting in with television presenter Chris Evans.

"Police have received an allegation of common assault on a young woman on March 12th at 7.30 in the evening in Regent Street," a Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said.

"There have been no arrests at this stage and inquiries are continuing.

Sky News reported that the 27-year-old woman spotted Evans, presenter of Channel 4's TFI Friday, and Gascoigne in the back of a stretch limousine outside the Cale Royal and approached the car to speak to Evans when the assault allegedly happened.
