Richard Quinn, who landed a double at Bath yesterday, proved a mixture of hero and villain when involved in finishes where two long odds-on shots bit the dust. The jockey got off to a shaky start after heavily supported 1 to 3 favourite Corniche found Mark Johnston's newcomer St Helensfield half a length too good in the Dodington Maiden Stakes.

Then the Quinn-partnered Lady Charlotte finished late and fast to upset Dick Hern's Taalluf, sent off 1 to 4 favourite, in the Sheilah Hern Maiden Stakes named in honour of the trainer's wife.

The result had many favourite backers gasping for breath as Taalluf appeared certain to collect when leading on the bit two out but could not cope with the final flourish of David Elsworth's filly, who scored by a length and a half.
